Circumcision is a traditional procedure in many nations, which are ambiguously estimated by experts. This procedure is one of the most ancient surgical operations. It was practiced long before our era in the African continent and in other regions with a hot climate. Circumcision received the special distribution in Judaism and Islam, however in recent time, they try to promote it in other denominations as well. Circumcision can be performed both for religious reasons and medical necessity.
From historical sources we know that circumcision was an important ritual, which meant boy becoming a man, purified from carnal taint, and obedience to a higher power. In Judaism, the tradition of circumcision stated that the cutting off of the foreskin should occur no later than the boy was 9 days old, and in Islam this procedure was done up to the moment when the boy reached 13 years of age. Some men wonder if there may occur erectile dysfunction after circumcision. First, let us consider what circumcision is.
What Is Circumcision?
Many doctors believe the significance of circumcision to be exaggerated, however, they do not diminish the use of this procedure in some clinical situations. However, circumcision in most cases is of national or religious character. It is supposed that after removal of skin folds, covering the glans penis, the man emerges as “clean”. As far as medicine is concerned, there is a list of indications having nothing to do with such thing as religion.
- Preventive-hygienic circumcision for eliminating the risk of some diseases.
- Medical circumcision is carried out after a diagnosis “phimosis” and in cases of premature ejaculation.
The Purpose of Circumcision
It should be noted that the procedure of hygienic-prophylactic circumcision is conducted chiefly in regions with a hot climate. As you know, viruses and bacteria breed well in the heat, and smegma (the substance that accumulates under the foreskin) is a good ground for breeding. After removal of the skin fold, the smegma does not accumulate, and consequently, the penis does not reproduce a variety of pathogenic microorganisms.
Some experts believe that proteins formed in the smegma can be dangerous for the female reproductive system. In the course of extensive research was put forward the theory that they are involved in the modification of the epithelium in the cervical canal (cervix), resulting in partner having a cancer. Of course, a similar effect can be achieved daily by washing the penis head.
Note!Medical circumcision is conducted also for releasing squeezed glans penis of an overly constricted foreskin. In medicine, this pathology is called phimosis. The disease is dangerous because in the absence of circumcision even weak erection leads to pinching the head of the penis, which in some cases may lead to tissue necrosis.
It is noteworthy that the phimosis in varying degrees is present in almost all newborn boys. After they reach one year of age narrowed foreskin is found only in 10% of children, and to 13 years — 1% of boys. In this regard, therapeutic circumcision recommended only after 12 years, if it wasn’t for the infringement of the glans penis. In addition, the use of circumcision is justified in the case of premature ejaculation. As a rule, such is the situation whereby ejaculation occurs after several frictions. The men who passed through the procedure of circumcision have longer erections because sensitivity of gland penis decreased. Among other things, circumcision is justified in cases of injury to the penis, or rather its foreskin. Also the procedure is shown in prirastanie of the foreskin to the head of the penis (such clinical cases are more common in men of old age).
Can Male Circumcision Cause Erectile Dysfunction?
According to statistics and numerous studies, the procedure of circumcision has no negative impact on male libido and potency. Erection is not only preserved in full, but according to many men who have undergone the process, becomes longer.
Experts also say that circumcision conducted by a specialist cannot harm men’s potency. Things are different with self-circumcision or the circumcision performed by a person not in having sufficient knowledge of human anatomy. The risk is primarily associated with damage to nerve fibers located under the foreskin at the base of the glans penis. They can be damaged, and then the penis might lose sensitivity. A similar pattern is expected when crossing major blood vessels of the penis. In addition to impotence, this situation can be complicated even by necrosis of the glans penis. According to statistics, the above-described situations occur in cases of unprofessional performance of circumcision. In hospitals the proportion of such situations is less than 1%. In general, however, many men circumcised are quite satisfied with their erections and duration of sexual intercourse, which increases at least two times. So, if the procedure is performed properly, male circumcision definitely cannot cause erectile dysfunction.
