Acute prostatitis is the prostate inflammation of the acute nature caused by infection. The disease is characterized by swelling of the prostate and the emergence of purulent lesions in its tissues. As is shown by medical statistics, every man is exposed to the risk of the emergence of acute prostatitis, and it is increasing more and more over the years.
Note!It is vital to know that seeing a doctor immediately is of great importance as this type of prostatitis may develop into the other one which is called chronic prostatitis, and this form is utterly difficult to treat.
Forms and Stages
There forms of prostatitis (which are its stages as well) are distinguished:
Catarrhal prostatitis tends to be induced by the infectious agent from the posterior urethra. Because the secretion from prostate also becomes inflammatory-changed, its selection may contribute to the emergence of the rear urethritis. The second stage of the malady is follicular prostatitis. Inflammation continues to spread and affects the entire prostate gland or its separate segments. There is pus in urethra, and the cells of the glandular tissue undergo certain destructive changes; the prostate continues to grow. If a patient suffers from parenchymatous prostatitis, the inflammation passes over to the interstitial tissue. As a rule, this stage is developing on its own if the infection occurred by contact (after surgery, puncture, etc.) or hematogenous way.
The Causes of Emergence
Acute prostatitis is usually caused by the infectious agents such as E. coli, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Chlamydia, Trichomoniasis, fungi of the genus Candida, and other microorganisms. There are a number of risk factors provoking the inflammatory process:
- The emergence of inflammatory ailments in a sexual partner; promiscuity.
- The presence of a urethral catheter.
- Earlier instrumental interventions in the area of urethra.
- The presence of stones in the prostate.
There are also noninfectious factors which may provoke the emergence of acute prostatitis. These include, primarily, stagnant phenomena in the pelvis, often caused by various sexual disorders, sedentary lifestyle, hypothermia, etc.
The symptoms of acute prostatitis
Every stage of acute prostatitis is defined by the common symptoms as well as the peculiar ones. The common features of acute prostatitis are:
- disorder of urination;
- general intoxication.
When it is the catarrhal stage, a man usually feels quite an intensive pain and heaviness in the area of the perineum, urination becomes painful and frequent. Signs of intoxication at this stage of development may be absent. The follicular stage usually has brighter, more pronounced clinical manifestations. Aching pain in the perineum begins to affect a penis or the area of sacrum. Urination can be so difficult and painful that it may develop into urinary retention. The general state of health is aggravated, which is caused by elevated temperature.
In cases of parenchymatous prostatitis the body temperature elevates even higher (up to 39.5 degrees), it is accompanied by weakness, chills, decreased appetite. At this stage men often face urinary retention, and any attempt to empty the bladder leads to significant pain. When neglected, acute prostatitis leads to such severe complications as the abscess of prostate, paraproctitis, phlebitis of venous plexus.
The predominant direction of the treatment consists in taking etiotropic preparations, which may include antibacterial and other drugs. Antibiotics have inhibitory effect on the activity of microbes. To reduce pain and spasms, a doctor will prescribe analgesics and antispasmodics; rectal suppositories and heat small enemas may also be prescribed. The subsequent actions include physiotherapy procedures (to help improve microcirculation, reduce inflammation and enhance local immunity), prostate massage, electrophoresis, UHF-therapy, etc.
It should be noted that prevention of acute prostatitis is very simple. It includes several important points:
- Careful personal hygiene.
- Strict observance of sexual hygiene.
- Timely treatment of the centers of purulent infections.
For any man caring about his health it is essential to normalize his physical activity and sexual life. That is it.
